If you have an older roof, there may be some repairs that you can do yourself. Things like patching a nail hole or replacing a loose shingle are simple repairs that you may want to do yourself. Doing these repairs correctly will ensure that you do not have leaks and damage that lead to costly repairs. Here are some tips to help you with some of the small repairs you may want to do yourself:
1. Finding Leaks At Ridge Caps
The ridge caps of your roof are a likely place for you to have roof leaks. This can be due to the center cap coming loose, exposed nails or missing pieces. This can sometimes be a difficult problem to spot. To see if you have leaking ridge caps, you can first inspect the attic for problems, such as water stains on rafters that come down from the tip of the roof. You can also look at the ridge for exposed nails, missing shingles and damage that can be causing these areas of your roof to leak.
2. Looking For Exposed Nails And Patching Holes
Exposed nails are another problem that you may have to deal with on your roof. This problem can be with decking nails that puncture the shingles and cause leaks. It can also be shingles that have been nailed poorly, which should be nailed on a line that is marked on the shingles. If you see any nail heads at the bottom tabs of shingles, the nails are not placed in the correct place and may need to have repairs done to correct the problem and prevent leaks.
3. Removing And Replacing Loose Or Damage Shingles
You may also need to remove and replace loose shingles. This is something that can often be caused by wind and storm damage. Use a flat bar to remove the loose shingles and slide a new shingle in its place. The shingles need to be nailed on the nail line, which is a visible strip in the middle of the shingle. When you lay the tabs down, the nails should be covered and protected from water and leaks.
If you want to do some of your own repairs, these are some tips to help you do them correctly. With an older roof, you may need to have extensive repairs or replacement, which you can contact a roofing contractor and talk with them about the maintenance and repair needs of your roof.
